Maritime schools face several challenges in preparing students to meet workplace demands in an increasingly complex, knowledge and technology-based, global economy. College students often lack generic skills that are valued by employers, such as critical thinking, creativity and problem solving, judgement and analytical, communication, and teamwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also, educators have criticized higher education for its failure to adequately provide graduates with the competencies to understand the knowledge base of the maritime profession and continue learning long after graduation. These educators argue that many students conceive learning as acquiring facts and memorizing rather than understanding relationships. Relationships among facts is the basis of critical thinking and analytical skills. Relationships among people is the base of soft skills. Transfer of relationships from an area to another is the basis of creativity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In recent years an increased emphasis has been placed on the importance of developing these skills in academic maritime studies. Several factors may have given rise to this phenomenon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. The maritime profession around the world has come under pressure in the last decades because of a series of changes in environmental regulation and digitalization and changing technology and globalization of the world economy. In many shipping companies, maritime professionals are expected to do a lot more and different than just the traditional functions.\u00a0<\/li>
  2. The maritime profession requires more than applying rules and regulations. It requires more creativity and innovative thinking in order to be competitive. So, creative problem solving is often required when no technical solution exists. Traditional teaching methods that demand students to maintain maritime rules and procedures are inappropriate to develop critical thinking skills in problem solving.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>
  3. The maritime professional bodies in all over the world have recognized the critical importance of the development of Soft skills and attributes for maritime graduates such as: communication, teamwork, critical thinking and problem solving, Creativity, diversity and multicultural issues and moral and professional ethics.<\/li>
  4. The development of students’ learning skills is also increasingly important in that many maritime universities have recognized that they lack enough skills to provide their graduates with the general skills required for the labor market.\u00a0
